    Job Description

    This position will be located at Trail of Tears State Park, 1958 Hill Road, Jackson, MO. 63755. Shifts are primarily Sunday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Regular days off will be Friday and Saturday. Must be available to participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars requiring overnight stays.

    • Inspection, cleaning, monitoring, maintenance, operation, documentation and routine testing of the park’s wastewater systems; assist with drinking water monitoring and tests and obtain water samples of the designated swim area during the summer.
    • Cyclical maintenance and general cleaning responsibilities for all park buildings, grounds and equipment, heating and air conditions (HVAC) systems and vehicles. Duties include removal of trash, debris and branches from park roads and buildings.
    • Mow and rake grass, leaves, plow snow and clear walkways of snow and ice. Duties include the operation of vehicles, mowers, tractors, backhoes, and power and hand tools.
    • Assist with prescribed burns, wildfire suppression, herbicide application, and other natural or cultural activities.
    • Assist the lead worker in construction or renovation projects, repairs and maintenance activities that can include basic electrical and plumbing work, carpentry, masonry, painting and repairs to machinery, mowers, vehicles and mechanical equipment.
    • Supervision and training for seasonal employees and volunteer labor with a focus on safe operations of equipment, vehicles, using personal protection equipment (PPE), monitor and inspect seasonal employee activities and performance. In addition, the position will provide park visitors information about park rules and regulations. This position is required to maintain a daily log of activities; use computers and use basic mathematical calculations.
    • Be able to work with limited supervision.


    • This position is required to obtain and maintain a Class D wastewater certification. If you do not currently possess this certification, you will be given 12 months to obtain necessary certification.

    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • 1-3 years of experience in any of the following trade areas: electrical, plumbing, concrete, and masonry, carpentry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements

    • A valid vehicle operator’s license is required.
    • Must complete Level 1 prescribed fire training within 12 months of employment.
    • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work in extreme or inclement weather conditions, able to stand or walk on uneven terrain for extended periods, lift, carry and load up to 50 pounds repeatedly, bend stoop, crawl and work on elevated surfaces, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, backpack blowers, climb ladders.
    • Must be able to work some evenings and holidays.
