JOB SUMMARYApplicants must hold a current TCOLE license to be considered for this position. The Deputy Marshal, Sergeant, oversees court security operations for the San Marcos Municipal Court and supervises personnel assigned to court security functions. This position ensures the safety and order of courtroom proceedings, directs the enforcement of court orders and warrants, and supports judicial operations through security planning, emergency preparedness, and coordinated enforcement activities. The role provides leadership to Bailiffs, collaborates with judicial staff and law enforcement partners, and upholds state-required security practices and standards.

- Supervises Bailiffs, including assigning daily responsibilities, coordinating schedules, providing direction, and evaluating performance to ensure effective courtroom security operations.
- Maintains security and order during all courtroom proceedings, including dockets, hearings, trials, and special settings, ensuring the safety of judges, staff, defendants, and the public.
- Enforces court orders by serving summons, subpoenas, and legal documents, and directs staff in their service.
- Oversees and conducts warrant enforcement activities, including locating defendants, performing field contacts, communicating through written and electronic means, and initiating arrests as necessary.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates court security programs, including screening procedures, emergency response plans, and security protocols for court facilities.
- Oversees the preparation, documentation, and maintenance of operational standards, security procedures, and monthly activity reports related to enforcement and court security functions.
- Serves as liaison to judicial staff, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and city departments regarding security operations, threat assessments, and coordinated enforcement efforts.
- Conducts and directs investigations into incidents, threats, or security concerns occurring within the Municipal Court or associated facilities.
- Reviews, evaluates, and recommends court security and screening equipment; ensures proper use and maintenance of issued equipment and assigned vehicles.
- Provides and coordinates training for Bailiffs, including court security practices, safety procedures, emergency response, and required continuing education.
- Supports the Marshal’s Office during major civil disorder or special safety deployments affecting Municipal Court operations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of four (4) years of law enforcement experience.
- TCOLE Peace Officer License, Intermediate or higher; must remain current with all required TCOLE training.
- Law enforcement supervisory experience.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Completion of Radiation Safety Officer training within one (1) month of hire.
- Completion of TCOLE-approved Court Security Training within one (1) year of hire.
- Completion of TCOLE Basic Bailiff Course (8 hours), Court Security Officer Course (40 hours), and Active Shooter Response training, including refreshers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Advanced TCOLE certification.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENTKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES- Knowledge of courtroom procedures, court operations, and state laws governing court security and warrant enforcement.
- Knowledge of law enforcement practices, investigative procedures, and officer safety techniques relevant to court environments.
- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with judicial staff, defendants, the public, and partner agencies.
- Skill in supervising and training staff, coordinating work activities, and maintaining accurate security and enforcement records.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThis position requires the ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent activities include standing, walking, hearing, and speaking. Occasional activities include sitting, pushing/pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, and operating foot controls. Running may be required in emergencies. Visual acuity is essential for observation and documentation.
WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. The role involves exposure to variable weather conditions, infectious diseases, and potentially hostile or violent individuals. Personal protective equipment may be required depending on the situation. This is a
safety-sensitive role.
