    Duties Description

    This is a full-time, seasonal position, with the opportunity to work year-round, that assists the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) with implementing Environmental Education programs. Under the direction of the Environmental Educator 2 and Environmental Educator 1, the Seasonal Environmental Educator will assist with educational programming for adults, children, school groups, camp groups, and scout groups at Connetquot River State Park Preserve, in addition to other LI Region State Parks.

    Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Plan and conduct environmental education programs for children and adults using displays, exhibits, and other teaching aids.
    • Assist in researching, writing, and producing educational and promotional materials.
    • Make arrangements for programs by suggesting program content, registering participants, preparing materials and teaching aids, and speaking in front of groups.
    • Clean, repair, and maintain facilities, equipment, exhibits, and the Pollinator Garden.
    • Assist higher-level Environmental Education staff by keeping detailed records, preparing reports, and assisting with social media.
    • Care for exhibit animals: ensure all housing is kept clean and that the requirements necessary for the health of the animals are met. Handling of animals will be required, including owls, snakes, turtles, and walking sticks.
    • Provide excellent customer service to Connetquot River State Park Preserve patrons who visit the Nature Museum and Gift Shop. Assist with Gift Shop sales and upkeeping displays.
    • Assist with regional events.
    • Performing other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

    Preferred qualifications:
    • Pursuing a BA or BS in Environmental Studies/Science, Biology, Sustainability, or a related degree.
    • Experience in teaching is preferred
    • Experience in operating a cash register is preferred.
    • Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus.
    • Experience in Social Media is a plus.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Must possess strong organizational and critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently or on a team.
    • Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside and lift up to 20 lbs.
    • Must be willing to keep current on all mandated OPRHP trainings, including First Aid and CPR/AED.
    • Ability to work with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
    • The appointee will be expected to work weekends, various shifts, holidays, and special events as required to provide operational coverage.
