    Ready to make a difference in your community? The Marin County Probation Department is conducting a recruitment for Juvenile Corrections Officer III and Juvenile Corrections Officer III - Bilingual.

    ABOUT THE POSITION

    There is currently one (1) vacancy for a Juvenile Corrections Officer III (JCO III) within the Marin County Probation Department which will be filled at either the Juvenile Corrections Officer III or Juvenile Corrections Officer III Bilingual level.

    Working within the broad social and philosophical values held by the community and the corrections field, JCO III’s perform intensive supervision of minors in the custody and care of Juvenile Hall and provide lead direction and training to Juvenile Corrections Officers I/II. JCO III’s may also:

    • Assist in program development.
    • Observe and report on behavior problems and physical complaints of detainees.
    • Assign work and trains other staff in work procedures.
    • Counsel groups and individuals.
    • Prepare and submit daily logs and observation and incident reports.
    • Liaise and participate in casework with probation officers.
    • Maintain awareness of security and disciplinary needs.
    • Perform intake and release duties.
    • Transport juveniles in the event of an emergency.
    JCO III’s are the advanced journey or lead level in this job series, and may temporarily act in the place of a Probation Supervisor.

    B i lingual assignments are distinguished by the required proficiency in the English language as well as a designated second language, in this case, Spanish and a caseload that requires the second language for the majority of the work performed. Proficiency requires the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form, sufficient to convey information and instructions to the public and other employees.

    ABOUT YOU

    The Highly Qualified Candidate has demonstrated experience working with and supervising a juvenile population in a criminal justice setting and have a track record of working cooperatively with coworkers, agency partners, clients and the public. They can identify problems, assess alternative courses of action and exercise sound reasoning in order to arrive at logical conclusions. In addition, the ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity; is highly organized; possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills; approaches their work with enthusiasm; and demonstrates a strong commitment to empowerment through communication, collaboration and cooperation. They are self-motivated and possesses a desire to seek continual improvement in departmental processes and procedures to affect positive outcomes in the criminal justice system.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Equivalent to completion of four years of college or possession of a Bachelors degree with major course work in behavioral sciences, social welfare, social case work, counseling and guidance, psychology, criminology, corrections, education, recreation or a closely related field; OR completion of 60 semester units from a college or university which included a minimum of 12 semester units in behavioral sciences, social welfare, social case work, counseling and guidance, psychology, criminology, corrections, education, recreation or a closely related field; AND one year of journey level experience in group supervision and counseling of minors in a detention setting at a level equivalent to the County of Marin's Juvenile Corrections Officer II.

    Certifications:
    Willingness and ability to maintain certificates in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Search and Arrest Procedures as required by California State Penal Code Section 832.

    Bilingual Testin g/Certification : Please note. For those applying for bilingual positions: A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    California Government Code Section 1031 requires that all applicants:
    • Be 18 years of age or older by the application filing deadline date.
    • Have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness (felony law convictions will be disqualifying).
    • Be a citizen of the United States (or must have filed for citizenship with the Department of Immigration one year prior to employment application date).
    • Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
    • Complete and pass a comprehensive psychological test administered by the Probation Department of designated agency.

    California State Board of Corrections, Standards and Training Commission (STC) requires that candidates participate in an annual STC approved training.

    The California State Board of Corrections, Standards and Training Commission (BSCC) requires completion of the Core Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) to perform duties of this position.

    Working Conditions : Must be able to work shift assignments and any hours of the day or night, weekends, holidays, and work in a locked detention facility.
